Hans Konrad Bondt (born September 14, 1767 in Schönengrund ; † 1817 in Philadelphia ; resident in Herisau ) was a Swiss entrepreneur and politician from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Hans Konrad Bondt was a son of the Ellen goods dealer Hans Ulrich Bondt. In 1790 he married Barbara Mettler, daughter of Hans Ulrich Sturzenegger and widow of Sebastian Mettler. At that time he was the owner of an India printing house in Herisau.

In 1797, Hans Konrad Bondt, together with Gabriel Rüsch, successfully requested the revision of the land register , which formed the legal basis for Appenzell Ausserrhoden. He was an agitator and popular speaker in favor of a Swiss renewal , in which he openly acknowledged his sympathy for France. He recruited his followers mainly in Herisau and the surrounding area and was often referred to as the mouthpiece of governor Johann Ulrich Wetter. Declared a rebel in February 1798, he was elected a Swiss Senator in April 1798. As a result of his political engagement, he neglected his business and went bankrupt in 1800, whereupon he had to resign. Hans Konrad Bondt then went to Amsterdam and in 1805 to the USA , where he died in 1817.
