Hans Maaß (born November 9, 1914 in Bremen , † August 2, 2000 in Langwedel ) was a north German painter .

Life

Hans Maaß grew up in the rural Langwedel (located in the south-east of Greater Bremen) as the son of a cigar worker. From 1925 to high school in 1934 he attended the Domgymnasium Verden . For financial reasons, it was not possible for him to start studying art. He studied at the University of Education in Kiel , became a teacher and then a soldier. In 1945, after being seriously wounded three times, he returned to Verden, where he studied painting and at the same time worked as an art teacher.

After twenty years of artistic work, he appeared as a painter in 1965 for the first time with artistic work; this was followed by major exhibitions in Vienna, Munich, Bonn, Hanover and in the vicinity of his homeland. In 1972 he moved from Verden to Langwedel-Daverden and thus returned to the landscape of his childhood, where he died on August 2, 2000 at the age of 85 and was buried in the cemetery in Langwedel-Daverden.

Independent of contemporary artistic directions, Hans Maaß pursued his own path, striving for the perfection of the " old masters " in the technique of oil painting, painting exclusively figuratively and above all through the composition of the objects in the picture - ancient, ideal, but also native landscapes and buildings , Faces, hands and (self) portraits, flowers (especially lilies, chrysanthemums, bouquets), painting utensils, symbolically used tools (“pendulums”) and personal mementos (e.g. dog tags from the time as a soldier) - the viewer Challenged controversy and achieved an image effect reaching up to the surreal .
