In his second Bundesliga season in 1969/70, he completed 21 Bundesliga games under coach Franz Seybold and ranked seventh with VfB.

After his time with the Stuttgart team, he moved to VfR Heilbronn in the then second-rate Regionalliga Süd in 1970/71 and finished eighth in the table with teammates Klaus Schmidt , Martin Kübler and Harry Griesbeck . He experienced a sporting climax on December 12, 1970 in the 1st DFB Cup main round at the home game against the cup defender Kickers Offenbach . In front of 15,000 spectators, Mayer scored the 2-0 final score in the 89th minute. Also in the 1971/72 season he was a member of the VfR-Elf, which in turn was able to occupy eighth place in the Regionalliga Süd.
