Hans Otto Janssen

Hans Otto Janssen (born May 18, 1924 in Dülken ; † December 8, 1995 in Viersen ) was a German graphic artist , draftsman and painter who was particularly successful as a commercial artist and poster artist. Among other things, he designed the logo of the Rotbäckchen brand .

Life and artistic creation

Hans Otto Janssen was the second of three sons of a Dülken dentist. After graduating from high school in Viersen (Lower Rhine) in 1942, he attended the Werkkunstschule Krefeld. During his studies at the Düsseldorf State Art Academy (1942–1944 and 1948–1949) he designed, among other things, advertising posters for cinemas in Mönchengladbach. One of his professors at the art academy was Josef Pieper. After completing his studies, he worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist. From 1950 Janssen created commercial graphics, packaging and advertising concepts. He also designed kinetic objects, light and glass sculptures . He was friends with the artist Will Brüll and the operator of the Illverich gallery, Wolfgang Paul. He belonged to the Mönchengladbach artist group "Die Planke", founded in 1951, and to the Viersen "Pölly Heckmann Kreis".

He also designed praline packs for the Sarotti brand and chocolate packaging for the Stollwerck and Lindt companies . In the 1970s he designed various plate packaging a. a. for a fairy tale radio play edition for the company Aulas Schallplatten (Schwanni) in Viersen. In 1982 I started over as a freelance painter, portrait painter and commercial artist. One of his most prominent motifs as a portrait painter was Friedrich Wilhelm Christians , former CEO of Deutsche Bank. In 1952 he designed the first Rotbäckchen logo for the Lauffs company. It was adapted in 1982 and is still an essential part of the brand's corporate design today . In the eighties, exhibitions in showrooms of Lower Rhine companies followed. From September 12, 1987 to October 11, 1987 the exhibition "Metamorphoses into the picturesque" took place. The text of the exhibition volume came from Richard Kreidler from Cologne. In 1994 he designed the poster for the Kunstfest NRW, which took place from May 1st to 21st, 1994 in Viersen. Janssen lived and worked until the end in Viersen-Dülken in an architect's bungalow designed by his brother. He was married to Lieselotte Janssen (née Baumanns) and had three children.
