life and work

Hans Peter Klauser studied mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics and physics at the ETH Zurich from 1930 to 1935, with photography as an optional subject, until an illness (paralysis, visual impairment) forced him to drop out. He turned to photography and from 1936 to 1938 completed an apprenticeship with Gotthard Schuh , who described him as “the only fertile offspring in my own work”.

As a freelance photographer, Klauser published photo reports in Zürcher Illustrierte , Tat , Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Heim und Leben , Sie und Er and Schweizer Spiegel from 1939 to 1947 . From 1942 to 1947 he ran his own studio. Between 1947 and 1952 he worked as a works photographer at the machine tool factory Oerlikon-Bührle . In 1953 he reopened his own studio and worked various times for Pro Infirmis and Pro Senectute .

Klausner developed the Orthoclin method for large-format reproductions, which he patented in 1957. He was married and had four children. His sister Maja Heller Schucan (née Maja Klauser) was a sculptor, draftsman and author.
