Rogels city model of Augsburg (1560–1563)

Hans Rogel (* probably around 1520 or earlier in Augsburg ; † around 1592/1593 there) was primarily a teacher , draftsman , form cutter and engraver , but was also active as a poet , printer and publisher .

Act

His fame is based on his Augsburg mileage disc, developed around 1565 . This was a practical overview for travelers, which listed road connections from a given main town to other cities. However, it was not the first mileage disk in modern times: The Nuremberg mileage disk from 1492 is considered to be the oldest of such representations.

Rogel's mileage disc was the first with the idea of the main town in the center and was reprinted several times. With Augsburg as the center, the route to various German and European trading locations was arranged in a circle in 12 sectors. Places between Augsburg and the destination were indicated with the mileage values depending on the space available. He used the information from the travel book of Jörg Gail from Augsburg from 1563.

Since Rogel's first writing is dated 1539, the frequently mentioned date of birth 1532 cannot be correct.

As a “Teutscher Schulhalter”, Rogel published a textbook on writing in 1548 and in 1551 a booklet on arithmetic. In 1559, Hans Rogel is mentioned as a sworn court whistle at the city court , a kind of bailiff who carried out the court's orders. In the years 1560/1563 he created a true-to-scale model of his hometown (today in the Maximilian Museum in Augsburg ), which, with his printed city map, gives a good view of the imperial city at that time. He made woodcuts for leaflets, calendars, congratulatory pictures, plans, book illustrations and writing templates.
