Hans Wandal (theologian, 1656)

Hans Wandal (also Johann Wandalin or Hans Vandal ; to distinguish it from his father also Hans Wandal the Younger ) (born January 14, 1656 in Copenhagen ; †  March 10, 1710 ibid) was a Danish Lutheran theologian and orientalist .

Life

Wandal, son of Bishop Hans Wandal (1624–1675), studied theology and oriental languages at the University of Copenhagen and perfected his knowledge from 1675 to 1678 on a trip through England, the Netherlands and Germany (where he studied with Abraham Calov at the University of Wittenberg ).

From 1680 Wandal was rector of the Sorø Akademi . In 1683 he was initially appointed professor of oriental languages ​​at the University of Copenhagen and advanced to the theological faculty that same year. Until his death he worked as a theology professor and officiated three times (1688, 1697 and 1706/07) as rector of the university. In 1687 he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD.

Wandal was considered a dispute theologian of Lutheran Orthodoxy , who fought , among other things, Calvinism and Chiliasm . But he also published many exegetical writings and a dogmatic textbook ( Hypotyposis sanorum verborum ), which had several editions.
