Hans Wandal (theologian, 1624)

Hans Wandal (also Johann Wandalin ) (born January 26, 1624 in Viborg , † May 1, 1675 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish Lutheran theologian and bishop .

Life

Wandal, son of Bishop Hans Iversen Wandal , studied in Copenhagen from 1642 and on a longer trip abroad in Leiden , Strasbourg , Basel and Leipzig . Returned to Denmark in 1651, he became professor of Hebrew at the University of Copenhagen in 1652 , professor of theology in 1655 and Dr. theol. From 1659 to 1661 he was rector of the university.

Wandal's most famous work, the “Juris Regii libri VI” (Six Books on the Law of Majesty), appeared in 1663–1672. Here Wandal justified the royal absolutism that King Friedrich III. Formulated in the Kongelov ( Royal Law ) 1661 and made constitutional in 1665. Wandal argues mainly with the position of kings in the Old Testament , but also draws on the theology of Martin Luther .

In 1668 the king appointed him Bishop of Zealand (Sjælland) and thus a primate of the Danish Church . Wandal remained dean of the theological faculty. His son of the same name Hans Wandal (theologian, 1656) was also professor of theology in Copenhagen.
