Hans Wentzel (art historian)

Hans Wentzel (born February 2, 1913 in Altona , † August 17, 1975 in Stuttgart ) was a German art historian .

Life

Wentzel studied art history, especially with Otto Schmitt , whose employee he later became. In 1935 he was with a thesis on the relationship of the high altar of the monastery church of the monastery Cismar to Lübeck choir workshops of the 14th century at the University of Goettingen to the Dr. phil. PhD. During the Second World War , he headed a project for the photographic documentation of the stained glass in Germany endangered by the war on behalf of the German Association for Art Research from the end of 1940. In 1953, as the successor to Otto Schmitt, he became professor of art history at the Technical University of Stuttgart , while at the same time teaching art history and art appreciation for prospective art teachers at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart . His successor at the Technical University was Herwarth Röttgen in 1977 .

Wentzel was best known for his work on medieval stained glass and stone carving. He was a major co-founder of the corpus of medieval stained glass " Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi ". He also wrote numerous articles in the Reallexikon on German art history .
