Hans de Wit

Johannes Wilhelmus Maria "Hans" de Wit (* 1950) is a Dutch educator and director of higher education. He is known for his academic work in the field of internationalization of higher education.

Career

He received a Bachelor, a Master and a PhD from the University of Amsterdam. From 1986 to 2005 he was Vice President at the Institute for International Affairs at the University of Amsterdam . He also worked as director of the Institute for International Relations at Tilburg University (1981–1985) and as assistant professor for Latin America Studies at Utrecht University (1979–1981).

In 2014 he was special advisor for the "ERASMUS Impact Study: Effects of Mobility on the Skills and Employability of Students and the Internationalization of Higher Education Institutions" commissioned by the European Commission. He was a member of the Scientific Committee and the editorial team of the second edition and the third edition of the Bologna Process Researchers' Conference in Bucharest from November 24-26, 2014 and November 27-29, 2017. He was also an advisor to the European Commission in the Preparation of their communication “European Higher Education in the World” in 2013.

Hans de Wit has been the director of the Center for International Higher Education based at Boston College , where he is also a professor, since 2015 . Before that, he was the founder and director of the Center for Higher Education Internationalization at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan and Professor of Internationalization of Higher Education at the Amsterdam University of Applied Science .

He has worked with the European Commission, the European Parliament, the World Bank, the International Association of Universities and universities around the world on issues relating to international higher education.

Editorial work

De Wit is the founding editor of the Journal of Studies in International Education, author and publisher of various books on the internationalization of higher education and a member of specialist editorial offices.

Hans de Wit is an author and blogger and is considered an influential scholar in the field of the internationalization of higher education.

De Wit is a founding member and past president of the European Association for International Education .

He is a member of the board of trustees of World Education Services and a member of the internationalization boards of the Stenden University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, the University of Göttingen in Germany and the Cooperative University of Colombia in Medellin.

Awards

He has received several awards for his contribution in the field of international education: EAIE (1999 and 2008), NAFSA (2002), CIEE (2004 and 2006), University of Amsterdam (2006), AIEA (2006 and 2013) and AMPEI (2014 ).
