The center's premier publication, International Higher Education, is quarterly and provides news and analysis on higher education around the world. The articles cover a wide range of topics of interest to scientists, decision-makers and practitioners. The journal endeavors to cover the predominant topics of current international debates as well as countries that are not given special attention in the research literature. IHE is also published in Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Vietnamese. As part of an existing partnership, Shanghai Jiao Tong University is responsible for the translation into Chinese. The Russian Higher School of Economics (HSE) is responsible for the translation of the Russian edition of IHE. It is also published in English by the Deutsche Universitätszeitung for distribution in German-speaking countries.

The center's books include studies on global policy trends, the development of research universities, the academic profession in developing and middle-income countries, developments in Asian universities, private higher education from a global perspective and much more.

The center also operates a website. This virtual library contains articles, books, podcasts and links to online-only databases, international organizations and scholars dealing with key issues in international higher education. The website contains a complete archive of previous topics in international higher education.

The specific concerns of developing countries are of particular interest - issues such as transnational higher education, international students and scholars, global trade in educational services, higher education reform, and so on. The International Network on Higher Education in Africa (INHEA) was a special initiative in recent years. INHEA is focused on African higher education and provides information and analysis from various sources. Another focus of the center is corruption monitoring. With the aim of trend analysis, it examines incidents of academic corruption in its various forms.

In 2010 the center, in collaboration with the national research university Higher School of Economics in Russia, participated in a research project on academic salaries, remuneration and contracts in 28 countries.

The center has received funding from a variety of sources including the Ford Foundation , Carnegie Corporation of New York, Toyota Foundation, MacArthur Foundation , Rockefeller Foundation, and others.

The center was founded by Philip G. Altbach and J. Donald Monan, Professor SJ of Higher Education at Boston College . After Altbach's resignation in 2015, Hans de Wit became the new director.
