Philip G. Altbach (* 1941 in Chicago ) is an American author, researcher and former professor at Boston College and also founding director of the Boston College Center for International Higher Education .

Early life

Philip Altbach was born in Chicago in 1941 and studied at the University of Chicago (Bachelor 1962; Master 1963; PhD 1966). In 1960, as a freshman, he brought the well-known CND symbol (originally a symbol designed for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, which subsequently became a widespread symbol of the peace movement) with him from Great Britain . Altbach later traveled to England as a delegate of the Student Peace Union (SPU) to meet with British peace initiatives. Upon his return, he convinced the SPU to adopt the symbol.

Career

He was a lecturer in education and postdoc at the Institute for Social Relations at Harvard University (1965-1967) and then research assistant to the associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1967-1975). There he was a member of the Institute for Educational Policy Studies and the Institute for Indian Studies. He was also a professor at the Institute for Educational Organization, Administration and Policy at the Graduate School of Education (State University of New York in Buffalo ( SUNY )). At SUNY Buffalo, Altbach was a professor at the School of Information and Library Studies and at the Institute for Sociology. In 1994 Altbach moved to Boston College , founded the Center for International Higher Education, and soon became the J. Donald Monan SJ Professor of Higher Education at Boston College - a position he held until his retirement in 2013.

Altbach held other academic positions, for example as a visiting professor at the Center for Studies in Higher Education at the University of California , Berkeley (1981). He was visiting professor at the School of Education at Stanford University , where he was also a senior scholar at the university-affiliated Hoover Institution (1988-1989). He was Senior Associate of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (1992–1996), Research Professor at the Institute of Sociology at the University of Bombay (India) as part of the Fulbright Program (1968) and - also as part of the Fulbright Program - head Scientist in Singapore and Malaysia (1963). From 2006 to 2007 Altbach was the scientific director of the “Fulbright New Century Scholars” program. He was visiting professor at two universities in China ( Peking University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology).

Altbach is editor of International Higher Education (since 1994) and since 2008 co-editor of the American Education Research Journal. He was editor of the Comparative Education Review (1978-1988), the Review of Higher Education (1996-2004) and the North American edition of Higher Education (1976-1992). Altbach was also the founding editor of Educational Policy (1985-2004).

He has written or edited more than 50 books. The spectrum of topics ranges from higher education to the Indian publishing industry to student activism. Some of his books are: Turmoil and Transition, The International Imperative in Higher Education, Comparative Higher Education, and Student Politics in America. He is co-editor of publications such as the International Handbook of Higher Education, The Road to Academic Excellence: The Making of World-Class Research Universities, Leadership for Worldclass Universities: Challenges for Developing Countries, and World Class Worldwide: Transforming Research Universities in Asia and Latin America.

Altbach's contribution to international education is widely recognized, particularly in relation to topics such as the academic profession, the internationalization of higher education, academic mobility, and the linking of academic research with political practice. In addition, he is considered one of the leading scholars in the field of student politics and student movements of the 20th century.
