Life

He was one of the sons of the elder Schweickardt von Gemmingen († 1371) and appears in 1370 as guarantor for Hans von Schmalenstein and his two sons in a document from Count Palatine Ruprecht regarding the castle and village of Weingarten. In 1372 he vouched for his cousin Albrecht von Gemmingen called von Hoven. In 1374 he donated the Johannis altar in Gemmingen. In 1394 Konrad von Schmalenstein and his wife Ellichin von Wartenberg transferred half of their shares in Lutolzheim and Ruchsheim to Hans and Georg von Gemmingen for 1,500 guilders. In 1395 Hans was one of the councilors of Bishop Nikolaus von Speyer at the arbitration court between the bishop and the cathedral chapter in Heidelberg. In 1397 he accompanied Bishop Raban von Speyer as bailiff to confirm the freedoms of the Landauer in Kirrweiler . In 1397 he vouched for Bishop Raban when he lent 1,500 guilders from the city of Speyer. In 1399, Bishop Raban agreed with Hans and his nephew Georg to have the ruined Altenburg near Bruchsal (today in Karlsdorf-Neuthard ) restored. On October 14, 1399, Hans received a power of attorney from Bishop Raban to hand out the episcopal fiefs and to receive homage in his absence. In 1401 this power of attorney was renewed and also extended to Hans von Helmstatt. In 1403 Hans von Gemmingen asked Bishop Raban to transfer the castle loan in Kestenberg to his nephew Georg. In 1408 Hans and Georg von Gemmingen asked for the 1000 guilder pledge back, for which they owned the Altenburg and the villages of Neidhard and Büchelau. The deposit then came to Zurich von Hornberg.
