Hansgünter Meyer

Hansgünter Meyer (born October 13, 1929 in Tangermünde ; † April 26, 2015 in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen ) was a German sociologist who was a professor at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and was the only president of the Society for Sociology (GfS).

Hansgünter Meyer studied philosophy, had been engaged in empirical sociological research since 1961, and from 1965 to 1974 worked on the development of sociology at the Academy of Science in the GDR. Since 1973 he was professor of sociology at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Berlin and also a member of the Council for Sociological Research of the GDR , which he had to leave in 1974 because of allegedly ideological unreliability. As a result, he was transferred to the Academy's Institute for Scientific Theory and was no longer allowed to conduct research as a sociologist. At the fifth sociological congress of the GDR he was elected president of the newly constituted Society for Sociology (GfS) in 1990. He held office until the GfS dissolved itself at the end of 1992. From 1990 to 1994 he was a research associate at the Social Research Center in Berlin and published on questions of university development in the new federal states.
