Hanshin
Hanshin ( Jap. 阪神 ) is composed of the second Kanji of Osaka ( 大阪 ) and the first of Kobe ( 神戸 ) together and referred to a central region in Kansai with and between the two cities.
The area between the city centers of Sannomiya (Kobe) and Umeda (Osaka) is known as Hanshinkan ( 阪神 間 ).
The term can be found in the name:
- of the Hanshin Tigers baseball team ,
- the railway company Hanshin Denki Tetsudō with a line between the two cities,
- of the department store group Hanshin Depāto
- several city highways in the area of both cities ( Hanshin Kōsoku No. 1 to No. 17 and No. 31) and in Kyoto ,
- the common name Hanshin-Awaji-Daishinsai for the great earthquake disaster in 1995 with devastation mainly in the urban area of Kobe and the northern part of Awaji-shimas .
