Hansjörg Mayer (* 1943 in Stuttgart ) is a German printer and publisher. Through his hand press prints and experimental typography, he is considered an important representative of concrete and experimental poetry. With his letter pictures he was also active as an artist.

biography

After traineeships in book printing companies in Switzerland and the USA, he started studying at the graphic design college. In the early 1960s he studied philosophy with Max Bense at the University of Stuttgart . Since 1962 he has been involved in hand press printing and experimental typography. In 1965 he became a lecturer at the Bath Academy of Art. Two years later, he finally moved to England and became a senior tutor at the Watford School of Art. From 1966 to 1968 he ran the Hansjörg Mayer gallery.

Edition Hansjörg Mayer

In 1964 he founded Edition Hansjörg Mayer. At the beginning he published both Bense and other representatives of Concrete Poetry. These include important portfolio works with Eugen Gomringer , Haraldo de Campos , Herman de Vries , Franz Mon , Helmut Heissenbüttel , Frieder Nake and others. He developed numerous typographic versions of texts by various authors. He has been playing with chance as a design method since 1961. He named the famous 26 futura prints from his series of publications that appeared in 1965 after his preferred typeface. In the same year he has his first work and publishing exhibition in Stuttgart. His second, comprehensive work and publishing exhibition took place in The Hague in 1968. In 1968 there is a collaboration with the Petersburg Press in London. Since the 1970s, Mayer has also devoted himself to ethnological topics and the like. a. he published numerous books on Tibet. Both areas, art and ethnology, are the mainstays of the publishing house to this day.

Collaboration with various artists

From the mid-1960s, Mayer collaborated with Dieter Roth, creating a new collaboration between publisher and artist in which both took high risks. Publications have been published that are works of art themselves and are considered to be groundbreaking for the genre of artist books. Roht's Collected Works were published in 25 volumes, special and luxury editions, graphics, films, records, posters, publisher directories and much more. Red is considered to be the most influential artist in his publishing house.

Mayer also published books on palindromes, the “Lackskins” and other groups of works for the Swiss André Thomkins. Emmett Williams' classic Anthology of Concrete Poetry is on the program alongside Richard Hamilton's catalogs of graphics, his Collected Words and the famous Polaroid Portraits . Numerous other books would not have been possible without Edition Hansjörg Mayer. These include works by the authors Mark Boyle, Richard Hamilton, Dorothy Iannone, John Latham , Tom Phillips. Gundi Feyrer, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Haegue Yang belong to the young generation of artists at the publishing house.

Work and reception

With the choice of Futura as the typeface and the design of an idiosyncratic typographic program, Mayer succeeded in giving the specific literature yet another impetus. It has been significant for the history of the publishing house that he was not interested in the so-called but misunderstood bibliophile prints, in the use of typographical means to achieve more or mostly less significant effects in text reproduction, in what is known as but misunderstood "poetry the type case ”. His interest in a new typographical syntax, his involvement in a specific art and literature have shaped his publishing program from the beginning to be essentially international.
