Gerhard Gran

Gerhard von der Lippe Gran (born December 9, 1856 in Bergen , † April 7, 1925 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian literary historian , professor at the University of Oslo and editor of two magazines. He was considered a prominent figure in Norwegian cultural life at the turn of the century.

Life

Gran's family came from the upper class. His father, Christen Knagenhjelm Gran , was a merchant, shipowner and politician as well as Vice Consul of the Kingdom of Hanover .

Gran attended the Bergen Cathedral School and then studied philology at Kristiania University (now Oslo). He graduated in 1881 and then became a teacher in his hometown of Bergen. among others at the cathedral school. He developed a reputation as an excellent educator. In 1890 he founded the magazine Samtiden in Bergen . After co-founder Jørgen Brunchorst withdrew, Gran was the sole editor of the cultural magazine from 1892, which was published by John Grieg until 1899 .

From 1900 to 1919 Gran was professor of Nordic literature at Kristiania University. In Aschehoug he found a local publisher for his magazine Samtiden . For William Martin Nygaard , the director of the publishing, Gran has also become an important advisor. Nygaard also supported him when he founded the literary journal Edda in 1914 . Gran remained editor of both magazines until his death.

Gran wrote about Norwegian and foreign writers, including Henrik Ibsen , Charles Dickens and Alexander Lange Kielland . From 1906 he published the series Småskrifter fra Det litteraturhistoriske seminar . His main work is his biography on Jean Jacques Rousseau , which appeared in two volumes in 1910 and 1911.

In 1905 Gran was awarded the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Saint Olav . He was also an officer in the Legion of Honor .
