John Grieg (born August 18, 1856 in Bergen ; † April 21, 1905 there ) was a Norwegian publisher .

Company history

The later publisher John Grieg was originally founded in 1721 by Peter Nørvig . It was the oldest publisher in Norway. In 1871 Georg Hermann Grieg bought the company. Under the direction of his nephew John Grieg, the company became one of the largest and most respected publishers in the country.

Today the publishing house John Grieg belongs to Fagboksforlaget , which bought the company in 2006.

Life

Grieg was the son of the Portuguese Vice Consul John Grieg . His older brother was the shipowner and politician Joachim Grieg .

After graduating from the Bergen Cathedral School, Grieg trained as a bookseller and printer in Copenhagen and Gothenburg . In 1877 he returned to Bergen, where he found work in his uncle Georg Hermann Grieg's printing press . In 1882 he took over the company, which at that time had ten employees. By the time Grieg died, this number increased tenfold under his leadership.

In his publishing house, Grieg published the Bergensposten newspaper, among other things , until it went up in the Bergens Tidende in 1893 . He was also one of the founders of Gerhard Gran's cultural magazine Samtiden , which was initially printed by Grieg. By publishing early works by Vilhelm Krag and Sigbjørn Obstfelder , which were rejected by other publishers, Grieg also played a role in establishing neo-romanticism in Norway.

In 1905 he was awarded the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Saint Olav .

Grieg was married to Marie Justine Agnethe Jebsen , a daughter of the entrepreneur Peter Jebsen . His son was the archaeologist Sigurd Jebsen Grieg .
