Haplochromis ishmaeli ( synonym : Labrochromis ishmaeli ) is a cichlid species that is endemic to Lake Victoria in East Africa.
features
Haplochromis ishmaeli has a typical Haplochromis shape with a beefy head and a large mouth. The fish reach total lengths of up to 16 cm, with a maximum standard length of 13.5 cm. Males have a yellowish green back, yellowish body sides and a grayish white belly. The dorsal fin is yellowish green like the back and patterned with reddish dots or stripes; the upper edge of the dorsal fin is blackish. The caudal and anal fins are greenish gray. There are three to five medium-sized egg spots on the anal fin. Females are brass-colored and show a not very clearly defined median stripe that is interrupted above the anal fin.
Way of life
Haplochromis ishmaeli lives near the coast over soft, muddy soils. It feeds mainly on water snails, and to a lesser extent on insects and their larvae. Like all Haplochromis species, it is a mouthbrooder . To spawn, the males create deep spawning pits. The females keep eggs and fry in their mouths for a period of 20 to 25 days.
Systematics
The species was first scientifically described in 1906 by the Belgian-British zoologist George Albert Boulenger and named after George Ishmaël, an interpreter for the Entebbe police in Uganda. The British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood made the way in 1980 for the type species , introduced by him genus Labrochromis ( Gr : -, which includes "labrum" "lip".) Humilior Haplochromis , H. mylergates , Mylodon H. , H. pallidus , H. pharyngomylus , H. placodus , H. ptistes, and H. teegelaari . However, it turned out that Labrochromis cannot be clearly distinguished from Gaurochromis by overlapping features and the species of the genera newly introduced by Greenwood were placed back in the genus Haplochromis .
Danger
The IUCN classifies the species as critically endangered or possibly already extinct. The population declined dramatically after the Nile perch ( Lates niloticus ), a very large predatory fish, was introduced into Lake Victoria. A small aquarium population still exists.
