Haplochromis paludinosus, also known as Astatotilapia paludinosa , is an African species of cichlid that occurs in the lower Malagarasi and the surrounding swamps in Tanzania.

features

The fish are a maximum of 14 cm long and have a typical, beefy cichlid shape. The body height is between 33 and 40% of the standard length , the head length is 33 to 39% of the standard length. Adult males have a gray-green basic color, breast and belly are dark silver-gray. The sides of the body show more or less clearly defined, some transverse and longitudinal ligaments. The gill cover is golden, the Branchiostegal membranes are blue-gray between the two halves of the lower jaw, but yellow between the gill covers. The lips are bright blue. The dorsal fin is bordered yellow and red. On the rear hard-rayed and on the soft-rayed section there are dark red spots, which are often also fused together. The anal fin is light gray and shimmers slightly reddish, the egg spots are orange-yellow. The outer area of the pelvic fins is sooty, the inner area yellow. The first ray of the pelvic fin is blue. The upper half of the caudal fin is transparent with dark red dots, the lower half is yellow. A description of the coloring of the females is not available.

Way of life

Haplochromis paludinosus occurs in swamps and rivers and can be found both between vegetation and in open water. Above all , gastric and intestinal examinations found detritus , fish innards and fish scales in the bowels. Mayfly larvae , caddis fly larvae and dragonfly larvae only make up a small proportion of the fish's diet. Like all Haplochromis species, Haplochromis paludinosus is a mouthbrooder .

Systematics

The species was described in 1980 by Peter Humphry Greenwood and assigned to the genus Astatotilapia . It is still listed under this name in the Catalog of Fishes, Fishbase lists it under the name Haplochromis paludinosus in the very species-rich collective genus Haplochromis . Systematically the way is somewhat isolated and stands at the base of "Lake Victoria region super flocks," meaning the Cichlidenradiation that in Victoria , in Lake Kivu , in Lake Albert , in Lake Edward , in Lake George , the Lake Kyoga , in Turkana , in the Lake Rukwa and occurs in Lake Nabugabo and is usually assigned to the genus Haplochromis .
