The Eduardsee ( Edwardsee ), which is also called Rutanzigesee , lies in East Africa for the most part in the Democratic Republic of the Congo , the northeast part is in Uganda .

The lake, which is part of the East African Rift Valley , lies east of the great Central African Threshold and west of the Uganda Highlands , directly south of the Ruwenzori Mountains . While the Eduardsee is fed by many small streams and rivers (including the Rutshuru and Rwindi ), its only outflow is the Semliki , which leaves the lake on the north-west bank to flow further north into the Albertsee . In the east, he is by the river Kazinga with the Lake George connected. It has a maximum length of 65 km and a maximum width of 38 km.

Henry Morton Stanley rediscovered the fish-rich lake for Great Britain in 1876 , visited it in 1889 and named it after Albert Edward, the then Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII ).

When Idi Amin ruled Uganda, the lake was called Idi Amin Lake or Idi Amin Dada Lake in that country .

Virunga National Park in Congo and Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda are in charge of management .

fauna

The Eduardsee largely shares its fauna with the Georgsee. Both lakes are inhabited by 35 to 40 species of cichlids , all but five of which are endemic , meaning they only occur here. In addition to the cichlids, there are 27 other fish species. Of these, only two are endemic. All non-endemic fish are also found in the Nile and its tributaries. Two endemic mollusc species and two endemic mollusc subspecies have been discovered among invertebrates . The non-endemic mollusc fauna is also found in Semliki , the White Nile , Lake Victoria , Lake Albert, and Lake Turkana . The fishing in Eduardsee mainly targets tilapia species , spiny catfish ( Bagrus ), predatory catfish ( Clarias ) and the Ethiopian lungfish ( Protopterus aethiopicus ).
