Happy People / U Saved Me is a double album consisting of the two albums "Happy People" and "U Saved Me". The CD combines danceable “good mood songs” (“Happy People”) and sensitive gospel songs (“U Saved Me”). The album is R. Kelly's second double album and has been certified three times platinum in the USA .

Happy People / U Saved Me was in the top 20 of several countries including Great Britain, USA, Switzerland, the Billboard R&B charts and Germany. In addition to sold out tours, the album also celebrated triple platinum status in the US by selling more than 1.5 million copies in the States. This was achieved even though only two songs were released with Happy People and U Saved Me. These were medium to weak successes in the USA, but both reached the top 10 in Great Britain. While Michael Jackson was experiencing a low and Prince resigned voluntarily, he consolidated his position in the R&B world and was able to build on old successes.

The Happy-People part stands for the tradition of the famous Chicago step dance. R. Kelly revives the “ groove ” of the 1960s and 1970s on Red Carpet , Love Signals or Love Street and what is also unique is that while most of them used fast, modern beats at the time, his album is a rather slow one supple. The second part of his double album shows Kelly from his vulnerable side. On U Saved Me , he thanks God for rescuing him from his depression, and in Prayer Changes he shares heartily about his unfulfilled college dream of becoming an NBA star. The ballads are the Kelly classics like I Believe I Can Fly or If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time and are very soul influenced.
