Haran

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Haran ( Hebrew : הָרָן) is the name of three people in the Old Testament .

Haran, son of Terah

Haran is mentioned in the list of the descendants of the sons of Noah in Gen 11: 26-29  EU . His father is Terach , his brothers Abraham and Nahor . Haran is the father of Lot , Milka (married to her uncle Nahor) and Jiska . Haran lived with his family in Ur in Chaldea (southern Mesopotamia ). He died there before his father.

Haran, son of Caleb

In 1 Chr 2.46  EU , a son of Caleb and his concubine Efa also bears the name Haran. His brothers are called Moza and Gases, his son Jahdai.

Haran, son of Jehiël / Shimi

Finally, 1 Chr 23.9  EU names a Levite named Haran. He belongs to the Gerschonites . His brothers are Shelomite and Hasiël. According to the Hebrew text, as well as the Septuagint and Vulgate , Haran was the son of Shimis , but his sons (Jahat, Sisa, Jëusch and Beria) are listed in the following verse 10 EU . The Luther translation adopts the traditional text, the standard translation changes from Shimei to Jehiël because of 23.8 EU .

Identity of name of person and place name

The identity of names between Haran as a personal name and Haran as a place name only exists in the German Bible translations (both the EU standard translation and Luther LUT , the Zurich Bible is an exception). In Hebrew, the name of the youngest Terach son is הָרָן Haran and the name of the city is חָרָֽן Charan . This is followed by the Septuagint (with Αρραν Arrhan for the person and Χαρραν Charrhan for the place) and the Vulgate (with Aran for the person and Haran for the place).
