The population of Pangkal Pinang was 108,411 in 1990 and rose to 134,082 in 2005. The population consists primarily of Hakka , who originally immigrated from the Chinese province of Guangdong . They are known as Peranakan and speak a Hakka dialect.
economy
Pangkal Pinang is one of the most important port cities of the Java Sea , fish , copra , pepper and tin are shipped from here. There is local production of coastal vessels and deep-sea fishing plays an important role in the city.
