history

Last words of St. wolfgang

In 866 the chapel dedicated to St. Othmar in Pupping. The holy Wolfgang died on October 31, 994 at the age of 70 years before the altar of the chapel. His last words are recorded on the facade of today's monastery church: Open the doors and let everyone in who want to see me die ... The saint was transferred to the monastery of Sankt Emmeram in Regensburg and buried there. The heart and entrails of the saint were buried in the St. Othmar Chapel.

The monastery in Pupping was founded in 1477 by the Counts of Schaunberg, who also brought the Franciscans to Pupping. The aristocratic family had a new church built in place of the old Wolfgang church, which was consecrated in 1490 by the auxiliary bishop Albert von Passau. During the Reformation , the Franciscans had to leave the monastery and hand over the church to the Lutherans. It was not until 1621 that they were able to return to the dilapidated and partially demolished monastery in Pupping. The church was redesigned in Baroque style and the monastery expanded so that it could accommodate 35 brothers. During the reign of Emperor Josef II , the Franciscan convent was abolished in 1786. The entire inventory was sold, and the monastery and church were demolished in 1801.

On the initiative of the two secular priests Johann Ev. Lamprecht (historian and cartographer) and Karl Kettl (founder of the Linz Marienanstalt) should be a place of worship in Pupping for St. Wolfgang to be erected. In 1879, when the church was consecrated, 3 Franciscans were already living there again. Over time, Pupping has become a well-known pilgrimage site for St. Wolfgang and was also the seat of the Pupping parish until it was dissolved. Today the church is located as a branch in the parish association Hartkirchen.

During the Second World War, the monastery was threatened with abolition several times and most of the building had to be made available for military purposes. After the war the situation stabilized again and the monastery even housed the Franciscan novitiate until 1961.

In 1968 the convent in Senden (near Münster) established the Pupping Clariss convent . Only one Franciscan remained in the monastery to look after the sisters and the church. Due to the lack of young people, however, the Poor Clare Monastery had to be closed again in 1998.

Today the Shalom Monastery Pupping the Franciscans is a place to live for men, women and married couples.
