history

Schoolyard

In 1872 the foundation stone was laid as a private school for girls. This was taken over by the city of Herne 14 years later, in 1886 . A few years later, in 1891, a secondary school for girls was built, which in the early days consisted of 15 students and a teacher. The demand rose steadily, so that in 1907 a new three-story building was built. In 1909 the school was finally recognized as a higher school and equated with higher school for boys. The school was renamed numerous times: 1909 to Lyzeum, 1913–1922 Viktoria-Luise-Schule and then Viktoria-Luise-Gymnasium. After this exceptional situation, a second new building was inaugurated as early as 1927, which helped the school to its status as an upper lyceum, in which 18 high school graduates passed their final exams for the first time in 1927. The school was damaged in the Second World War , but was initially largely restored in its old historicizing form. In 1946, classes could be resumed as the construction work had largely been completed. In 1958, a spacious extension was finally completed, and the old building was then redesigned in the modern style. Here the magnificent old gables were removed and a flat roof was built. In addition, the auditorium's stage was built on the west side of the building. Later, a new sports building with a sports and gymnastics hall was built on Schaeferstrasse and Goethestrasse, which replaced the old gym behind the main building. Since April 1, 1974, the school has had its current name, Haranni-Gymnasium, and is attended by both boys and girls. Due to the increasing number of schoolchildren, a completely new extension building was necessary, which was completed in 1999.

principal

Irene Menkhoff became the head of the girls' high school in 1958. On October 31, 1971, she gave up her post to Ilse Thüner-Holz. Ilse Thüner-Holz again passed the office on June 4, 1985 at her own request to Hans-Joachim Paul, who was followed by Heike Götte from 2006 to 2013. Nicole Nowak has been the headmistress since February 1st, 2015.
