The Harbin Z-5 ( Chinese  直 -5 , Pinyin Zhí-5 ) is a Chinese replica of the Soviet Mil Mi-4 helicopter .

history

The Harbin Z-5 was produced in Harbin . The blueprints provided by the USSR reached China in 1958, a few years before the Sino-Soviet split . The first flight took place in 1959. However, serial production was delayed and did not begin until the mid-1960s. The Z-5 was used in large numbers by the People's Liberation Army , Air Force and Navy of China. Some machines are still stored as a reserve. China exports a number of Z-5s to allied countries. Over 545 Z-5s were built. Some Z-5 helicopters have been modified to carry machine guns and missile containers.

During the Sino-Western rapprochement, a variant of the Z-5 with a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 “Twin Pac” turbo drive was planned in 1979 , but not built. Instead, the less successful development of the Harbin Z-6 with a Chinese engine took place .
