Jiří Suchý (born October 1, 1931 in Pilsen ) is a Czech actor, songwriter, lyricist and director. In 1959, together with Jiří Šlitr, he founded the Semafor Theater, which he owns today.

Suchý spent his childhood in Klatovy and moved to Prague in 1936 . Suchý had his first appearances in the theater scene in Prague's Reduta . From the mid-1950s he played the double bass there and performed his own songs. He performed with Judita Čeřovská or Miroslav Horníček , for example . Horníček introduced Suchý to Jiří Šlitr. In 1958 Suchý founded the Theater am Geländer with Ivan Vyskočil and others , where they played Suchý's play Kdyby tisíc klarinetů for the premiere . Suchý left the theater soon after and founded Semafor in 1959 with Šlitr. The two became idols in the theater scene, which was constantly confronted with reprisals from the Communist Party . In 1968 they signed the 2000 Word Manifesto . After that, Suchý was no longer allowed to appear on television or publish any more films and he was relieved of his managerial position. After Šlitr's death in 1969, Ferdinand Havlík wrote the music for the Semafor. During the Velvet Revolution , the Semafor under Suchý went on strike like other theaters. Today Suchý runs the Semafor together with Jitka Molavcová , who first appeared there in 1970.
