Hardenberg is the name of an old Westphalian noble family .

There is no tribal relationship to the family of the same name, the Counts of Hardenberg in Lower Saxony.

history

The Knights of Hardenberg sat at Hardenberg Castle (and previously probably at Hardenberg Castle ) in Velbert-Neviges and were first mentioned in a document in 1145. The Hardenberg estate was sold to Gerhard von Jülich-Berg in 1354 . Heinrich II. Von Hardenberg then settled in Hardenstein Castle upstream near Herbede .

When Alexander Duncker states in 1883:

“Since the earliest times, the lordship of Hardenberg (Neviges) has been owned by the Barons of Hardenberg, who formerly had a name similar to the latter (Nivelo, Nivelung), as they did from the 14th to the 12th century and beyond back, can be documented. The barons of Hardenberg have always associated their name Nivelung with the Nibelung known from the heroic saga. Even if myth and history are mixed up in these stories, the name Neviges resp. Hardenberg was closely interwoven with the beginnings of German history in pre-documentary times, and to this extent Hardenberg must be regarded as a memorable place for Germans. "

The family died out in 1463.
