150 years of the Bad Laerer Kreuzweg

The Hardensettener Kreuzweg is a way of the cross , also popularly known as the Way of the Cross on the Kalvarienberg , in Hardensetten , a district of Bad Laer . It is of supraregional importance; On Christian holidays, over 1000 visitors visit the Way of the Cross for prayer and reflection.

location

The Hardensettener Kreuzweg is located on Glandorfer Straße, the road that leads from Bad Laer to Glandorf , at the highest point, the Kalvarienberg, in Bad Laer in the district of Hardensetten , easily recognizable by a linden tree, the so-called Prediger-Linde , which on the southern roadside stands.

history

According to tradition, there was a pagan court and cult site on the Hardensetten Calvary. Iroschottische monks built a chapel on this historic site, which was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the years. As early as the 13th century, the parishes of Laer and Glandorf held services there together, which was documented in the Peace of Westphalia . In 1802 the chapel was an "annoying traffic obstacle" in the way and was finally demolished. In 1829 the farmer Buschkotte had a cross, the so-called Buschkotten Krüß , erected at the point of the path . It is there that his son Heinrich, who is ill with facial rose and after having completed the strenuous Telgter pilgrimage , fell asleep tired and fully recovered. The current way of the cross goes back to an initiative of the school vicar of the elementary school in Laer, Matthias Sommer , who went on free afternoons with his school class on the mountain in order to create the way of the cross himself. When he ran out of funds, he turned to his school children who had emigrated to America, who supported him with generous donations. In 1857 he inaugurated the Way of the Cross. The station pictures were initially made of wood. A Nazarene style Mount of Olives group was also added. This was protected by a neo-Gothic chapel in 1861 . In the same year the 14 stations of the cross made of Baumberger sandstone in the Nazarene style were erected to replace the wooden ones. They were created by the sculptor Jean Baptist Prang from Münster . In later times, plaques with the fourteen helpers in need were placed opposite the western stations of the cross , which have been on small pillars since February 26, 1994. In 1930 the Calvary Group was set up at the end of the Way of the Cross. In 2007, for the 150th anniversary, the Kalvarienberg and its groups underwent a thorough renovation; a memorial stone reminds of it.

description

The so-called Prediger-Linde stands south on Glandorfer Straße . Its crown was cut off so that a pulpit could be placed there. In front of it is the so-called Buschkotten Krüß . Opposite, on the right side, is the chapel with the Mount of Olives group. Then there is a 275 meter long, slightly rising cul-de-sac to the north. This is where the actual way of the cross begins. On the left are the Stations of the Cross and on the right the plaques of the Fourteen Holy Helpers . Finally, the Golgotha group forms the end .
