Hardshell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hardshell is a term for functional textiles and the term for an embodiment of bicycle helmets .

clothing

The textiles used are extremely weatherproof. They usually consist of two to three different layers. Hardshell textiles are usually cut wide, as they are usually worn as the outermost layer. Like softshell clothing, hardshell is mostly used for sports and leisure clothing.

material

Hardshell is completely waterproof, windproof and breathable clothing that is made from particularly robust and hard-wearing outer materials. The outer material is usually laminated and has taped seams as well as laminated zippers. The outer layer is usually made of polyester or polyamide , and the inner lining is often made of polyester or nylon . Many rain jackets are made of hardshell materials. Over the years, the interior climate of the completely waterproof materials has been significantly improved, so that today a comfortable body climate can be ensured where previously textiles tended to be windproof and waterproof in both directions. Today a layer system is used, which consists of the top layer, the membrane / coatings and possibly a thin inner lining. These different layers are laminated into one layer.

Hardshell exists in a wide variety of designs. There are simple models with a sealed top layer that is waterproof, but not as robust as a membrane. For the more robust hardshell variant, a special membrane is laminated directly onto the outer fabric. This membrane is breathable, waterproof and significantly more durable than coatings.

Intended use

Hardshell clothing is ideal for a wide variety of outdoor activities . Hardshell is particularly suitable for rucksacks thanks to its robust material and can be used both as a rain jacket and as a windbreaker. These variable uses mean that hardshell is ideal for everyday use as well as for hiking or trekking .

Bicycle helmet

Hardshell helmets (hard shell helmets) have a hard plastic coating around the foam. Due to their high weight, they can only be found practically in the downhill area. Often they are also equipped with a chin guard as face protection. The hard, smooth surface offers protection against mechanical impact and makes it easier to slide off the ground.
