Statue of the Harmless

The Harmlos is a so-called statue in the vernacular in the green area of the Prinz-Carl-Palais near the English Garden in Munich.

Still image and location

The "Harmlos" is a marble sculpture in a Graecizing style, a work by Franz Jakob Schwanthaler . It depicts life-size Antinous , a young Greek man, many of whose ancient portraits have survived to this day and who again became a popular subject of artistic creation in the Renaissance and in the 19th century. The young man's left hand rests on a board. The statue takes its popular name from the inscription carved there. It is:

HARMLESS.

WALK HERE.

THEN RETURN.

REINFORCED.

FOR EVERYONE.

OBLIGATION BACK.

The Harmlos is located southwest of the English Garden and is separated from it by Von-der-Tann-Straße . The small park in which the statue is located was formerly the official entrance to the intended 'Volkspark', with the inscription referring to the endeavor to offer the residents of the city an officially approved permit and thus a place to relax. The small green area in front of the statue is called the “harmless meadow”.

history

The statue was donated to the tenth anniversary of the English Garden in 1803 by the Bavarian Minister Count Topor Morawitzky , who commissioned the sculptor FJ Schwanthaler with the work.

At the time the monument was erected, the regimental path running from the Hofgarten barracks was located here . At that time the English Garden could only be reached from this point via the Hofgartentor , which led through the still existing bastions. A little later, the future financial garden and the Palais Salabert, now the Prinz-Carl-Palais , were built in the immediate vicinity .

The original of the sculpture is in the Residenz Museum ; A copy from 1983 has been placed at the old location.
