Harold Earl Kleinert (born October 7, 1921 on a farm near Sunburst , Montana , † September 28, 2013 ) was an American hand surgeon. He has published over 200 scientific publications and after him Kleinert's follow-up treatment for injuries to the flexor tendons of the hand is named.

Career

As the son of a farmer, Kleinert was mainly influenced by a farm helper who, unrecognized, was a doctor but had lost his license. His father wanted him to become a farmer, but his mother, Cristine M. Kleinert, allowed him to go to a two-year college in Montana. From there, Kleinert first moved to Ann Arbor and from 1943 to 1946 to Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia . He completed the Rotating Internship at Grace Hospital in Detroit and worked from 1949 to 1953 as a Surgical Resident. The latter was interrupted by military service with the US AirForce from 1947 to 1949. In 1953, Kleinert founded the " University of Louisville Hand Clinic". Today Kleinert is Professor of Surgery at the University of Louisville and Purdue University .

In 1980 Kleinert received the AMA Scientific Achievement Award .

Kleinert - Kutz

The hand clinic of Dr. Kleinert was reinforced in 1964 by Joseph E. Kutz . This gave birth to the "Kleinert, Kutz and Associates Hand Care Center PLLC", which today employs 15 hand surgeons at 4 different locations (in the states of Kentucky and Indiana ). Later they founded the "Christine M. Kleinert Institute" (after Kleinert's mother), a non-profit organization which enables trained surgeons or orthopedists to familiarize themselves with the latest techniques in hand surgery. To date, this institute has trained 1,100 surgeons from 58 countries and has become an international name.
