Harold G. Cogger

Harold "Hal" George Cogger (born May 4, 1935 ) is an Australian herpetologist who worked at the Australian Museum in Sydney during his professional career .

Life

In 1952, Cogger began as a curatorial assistant at the Australian Museum. In 1959 he obtained his bachelor's degree and his master's degree in 1961 from the University of Sydney . In 1969 he was with the thesis A study of the ecology and biology of the mallee dragon Amphibolurus fordi for Ph.D. from Macquarie University in New South Wales . From 1960 to 1975, Cogger was curator of the herpetological department at the Australian Museum. From 1976 to 1995 he was deputy director of the museum. From 1997 to 2001 he was conjoint professor at the University of Newcastle in New South Wales. Cogger's main research interests are the frogs , lizards and snakes of Australia, New Guinea, Japan, Indonesia and several islands in the western Pacific. In 1975, Cogger published his best-known work, Reptiles and Amphibians of Australia , the first field guide on the frogs and reptiles of Australia, of which there were seven editions until 2014.

In 1967, Cogger became a member of the Australian Society of Herpetologists (ASH). In 1969, 1970 and 1974 he was Vice President and from 1971 to 1973 he was President of this society.

Honors and Dedication Names

The frogs Oxydactila coggeri and Mixophyes coggeri and the reptiles Ctenotus coggeri , Emoia coggeri , Geomyersia coggeri , Hydrophis coggeri , Lampropholis coggeri , Oedura coggeri and Coggeria naufragus are named after Cogger . In 1997 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Sydney.
