Harry Coonce

Harry Bernard Coonce (* 1939 ) is an American mathematician and initiator and founder of the online database Mathematics Genealogy Project .

Life

Coonce received his Ph.D. in 1969 from the University of Delaware with the thesis A Variational Method for Functions of Bounded Boundary Rotation . Until his retirement he was a professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato .

In 1996 he started the Mathematics Genealogy Project, in which almost 250,000 (as of August 2019) scientific family trees of mathematicians and scientists working in related fields ( theoretical physics ) are recorded. The online database is currently operated by North Dakota State University .
