Harry Neß

Harry Neß (born July 1, 1947 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ) is a German professional pedagogue and print historian.

He works significantly in the successor to Claus W. Gerhardt on the constitution of the research subject of printing and media history, which integrates technical, social and economic history issues.

Education and profession

After an apprenticeship as a book printer (1966) and studying printing engineering at the Berlin University of Fine Arts (1969–1972), he completed his teaching degree at the Technical University of Darmstadt (THD) with Hans-Jochen Gamm and Gustav Grüner with the first state examination (1976) . After his second state examination (1977) at the Gutenberg School in Frankfurt am Main and the Magister Artium at the THD (1982), he received his doctorate in 1990. phil. with Walter Georg at the Fernuniversität Hagen with the dissertation topic The book printer - professional experience and professional training from Gutenberg to the Prussian industrial reform (1810) . From 1977 to 1997 he worked as a vocational school teacher and held various positions in teacher training, the school administration of the State of Hesse and the federal- state commission for educational planning and research funding (BLK). Until 2012 Neß was entrusted with the management of various research projects for the development of instruments for recording and recognizing informal and non-formal learning at the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF), to which he has been an associated scientist ever since.

Printing history

With his involvement in the Central Technical Committee of the Printing Industry (ZFA) (1979–1985) and his activities as a city councilor in Darmstadt (1985–2001), he was elected chairman of the International Working Group for Printing and Media History (IADM) in 2000. In this function, he works at the annual specialist conferences with Roger Münch ( German Newspaper Museum ) and, together with Silvia Werfel, publishes the Journal for Printing History , which appears in the specialist magazine Deutscher Drucker . Neß has been a board member of the International Senefelder Foundation (ISS) since 2016 .
