Harry van der Laan (2018)

Harry van der Laan (* 1936) is a Dutch astrophysicist and was Director General of the European Southern Observatory from 1988 to 1992 .

education

He wrote his doctoral thesis at the University of Cambridge in 1962 with a dissertation in astronomy and astrophysics on the subject of Mathematics Subject Classification

Career

From 1976 to 1986 he taught at the University of Leiden and the Leiden Observatory .

From 1988 to 1992 Harry van der Laan was Director General of ESO.

From 1994 he worked at the Astronomical Institute of the University of Utrecht and is currently still an active member of the International Astronomical Union . In 1979 he was elected a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW). Since 1988 he has been a full member of the Academia Europaea .
