Harshana Thilakarathne

GM Harshana Thilakarathne (* 2003 ) is a Sri Lankan chess master .

Thilakarathne is considered to be one of the greatest talents in Sri Lankan chess. At the age of 6 he won local championships and from then on dominated the national youth championships in his age categories. In 2009 he won the bronze medal at the Asian Youth Games U7 in Colombo . At the U13 student world championship in Sochi in 2016, he won the silver medal after the Uzbek Nodirbek Abdusattorow . He repeated this success two years later in Durrës when he again won silver in the U15 category.

As a 12-year-old he took part in the final of the Sri Lankan national championship for adults for the first time. Thilakarathne represented Sri Lanka on board two at the 2018 Chess Olympiad in Batumi , where he scored 6 points from 10 games (+3 = 5 −2). In the same year he won the U16 Commonwealth Championship in New Delhi . In 2019, at the age of 16, he won the Sri Lanka Championship for the first time.

Thilakarathne is trained by the Ukrainian Dmytro Komarow , among others . Thilakarathne has held the title of FIDE Master since 2018 .
