Athletic career

Hartmut Molata played in the junior division of the company sports club (BSG) Stahl Maxhütte until 1972 and then moved to the upper division FC Carl Zeiss Jena. Until 1974 he played in the junior league and in 1973 played two international matches with the junior national team . As early as 1973 he was in the quarter-final cup match Stahl Riesa - FC Carl Zeiss (1: 3) for the first time in the first team. For the 1974/75 season Molata was reported for the second-rate GDR league team FCC II. Of the 22 league games he played 16 games, in which he was mainly called up as a center forward and scored two goals. In the following season Molata was used for the first time in the GDR Oberliga. He was called up five times between Matchday 21 and 26, and with three goals he met the expectations placed on him. In addition, he continued to play in the 2nd team, for which he played eleven of the 22 league games and scored seven goals. For the 1976/77 season he was officially nominated for the first league team. First, however, he was used in the junior league, where he completed most point games with the previous 2nd team. After he had excelled there in the first seven games with five goals, he was used for the first time on the 8th league game day in the first team. In his nine appearances, however, he was only in the starting line-up four times, and his two goals were not enough for a regular place in the first team. In the junior league, Molata finally came to 15 games and six goals. At the end of the season, FC Carl Zeiss Jena parted ways with Molata.

This joined the league club FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt for the 1977/78 season. There he played only the league games 2, 3, and 4 and scored one goal. In November 1977 he was drafted into the National People's Army for 18 months . After his release, he went to the league club BSG Chemie Leipzig, where he played his only league game for the Leipzig on the last day of the 1979/80 season. The company sports club BSG ended the season as relegated and played in 1980/81 in the GDR league. In the 22 GDR league games, Molata did not succeed in his 17 missions to play into the starting eleven. Although he scored six goals, he was only in the starting line-up nine times and only played five games over the full duration.

After the unsatisfactory season for him, Molata moved to the GDR league team Motor Rudisleben for the 1981/82 season , where he stayed for two seasons. His coach Klaus Bangert used him regularly as a left winger and found the ideal position for Molata. Spared from protracted injuries, he played 37 games of the 44 league games and was a successful goalscorer in 1982/83 and, with his ten goals, the top scorer of his team. Despite this positive development, the 27-year-old made another change in the summer of 1983 and joined the newly promoted East German league, BSG Werkzeugkombinat Schmalkalden . Here, too, he was able to establish himself as a regular player by playing 20 of the 22 games of the 1983/84 season. He continued to storm on the left winger but only scored one goal. The BSG of the tool factory did not manage to stay in the GDR league and was relegated back to the district league. Both the BSG and Hartmut Molata did not return to higher-class football afterwards. Molata stayed with WK Schmalkalden until 1990.
