Hartmut Waetzoldt

Hartmut Waetzoldt (* 1941 ) is a German ancient orientalist .

Hartmut Waetzoldt studied Assyriology at the University of Heidelberg from the winter semester 1962/63 . The academic teachers included Adam Falkenstein , Burkhart Kienast , Wolfgang Röllig , Giovanni Pettinato and Karlheinz Deller . In 1970 he finished his studies with a doctorate , the subject of the dissertation was research on the New Sumerian textile industry . Between 1971 and 1973 Waetzoldt was employed as a research assistant at the University of Turin . The habilitation took place in 1975 with a thesis on the subject of writing in Mesopotamia based on the texts from the Neo-Sumerian period (approx. 2164–2003 BC) again in Heidelberg. In 1977 he was appointed professor, a little later as an extraordinary professor, and in 1979 as a university professor. Since 1988 he has also dedicated himself to the organization of scientific conferences, such as the XXXIXe Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale in July 1992 with more than 600 participants. He has also been the editor of the Heidelberg Studies on the Ancient Orient with Harald Hauptmann since 1988 . So far Waetzoldt has published more than 100 works, including eight monographs.
