Burkhart Kienast

Burkhard Kienast (born July 3, 1929 - † November 17, 2014 ) was a German ancient orientalist ( Assyriologist ).

Kienast studied Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Semitic Studies and Legal History at the University of Heidelberg , where he received his doctorate in 1956 under Adam Falkenstein . He then worked at the Leopold Wenger Institute for Legal History at the University of Munich , at the Vorderasiatisches Museum in Berlin and for the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary . In 1961 he received his habilitation at the University of Heidelberg. From 1961 to 1963 he was a consultant at the Baghdad department of the German Archaeological Institute and took part in the excavation in Uruk- Warka in 1961/62 . From 1966 to 1973 he taught ancient oriental studies at the University of Erlangen , from 1973 to his retirement in 1994 at the University of Freiburg .

His academic focus was on Akkadian and ancient oriental legal history .
