Wolfgang Röllig

Wolfgang Röllig (born February 6, 1932 in Dresden ) is a German ancient orientalist .

Life

Wolfgang Röllig attended the Thomasschule in Leipzig from 1942 to 1950 . In 1952 he graduated from high school in Berlin-Steglitz . He studied oriental studies , ancient history and theology at the Free University of Berlin , the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg and the University of Vienna . In 1960 in Berlin, Röllig wrote his dissertation Contributions to the Explanation of Selected Phoenician-Punic Inscriptions on Dr. phil. PhD. From 1962 to 1966 he was an assistant at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. He oversaw the publication of the Tübingen Atlas of the Middle East and taught from 1966 until his retirement in 1999 as a professor for ancient oriental studies at the ancient oriental seminar of the University of Tübingen. In 1978 he acted as editor of the first volume of the New Handbook of Literary Studies , "Old Oriental Literature". Röllig is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute . He is also the editor or co-editor of the corpora “Répertoire géographique des textes cunéiformes” and “ Handbook of ancient Hebrew epigraphy ”. In 2009 Röllig presented a translation of the Gilgamesh epic .

Since 1996 he has been a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .
