Hartwig is an impact crater on the westernmost edge of the front of the moon , immediately east of the Schlüter crater . The crater has been severely eroded, and the crater wall has almost completely disappeared, especially in the southeast.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1964 after the German astronomer Ernst Hartwig .
