criticism

The Hartz and cordial format regularly receives public criticism, both from the residents of the cities and settlements portrayed and from official administrative bodies. For example, the residents of the Duisburg railroad settlement wrote an open letter to the public in which they accused the production company and the broadcaster of "gimmicky" and depicting a "caricature of reality". The inhabitants of Pirmasens and Bitterfeld-Wolfen as well as the city of Salzgitter also criticized openly and criticized the too negative and clichéd, stereotypical representation of the protagonists and the locations.

The political scientist and poverty researcher Christoph Butterwegge responded to the question of why so-called social reports like Hartz and Warm are very popular with television viewers:

“That relieves all those who are not affected by the problems themselves. They are made aware: You are not to blame for the fact that over two million children and young people live in Hartz IV households. You don't have to do anything politically or socially to change anything. Those who are in a similar situation are taught: You have to come to terms with it. Look, they feel the same way. "

- Christoph Butterwegge

The viewer would declare the protagonists of the show to be "poorly well-off" and feel better about it.
