The Rabbit Island ( Russian остров Заячий , as Sajatschi Island known) is a single island in the Neva River in Saint Petersburg , Russia . The Kronwerk Trench separates it from the Petrograd Island to the north and is connected to it by two bridges, the Kronwerkski and Joannowski Bridge , the oldest bridge in Saint Petersburg.

history

The Rabbit Island was mostly swampy, unpopulated and insignificant until 1703, when Peter I began to build the Peter and Paul Fortress on it, for which he himself laid the foundation stone. Until the late 19th century there were three canals within the fortress, dividing the island into four parts. The canals were filled in in the late 19th century. The island provides picturesque views of the city's historic center and the Neva.

During the Red Terror , the island was the scene of massacres of enemies of the state. The remains of the victims were recently discovered while building a road to an underground car park in a mass grave. Some estimate that the number of victims buried on the island runs into the thousands. The human rights organization Memorial is currently trying to convince the authorities that the graves there should be archaeologically examined.
