In the 17th century, Finnish and Swedish farmers settled in a Russian settlement to promote the development of the island. In 1703 Peter I laid the foundation stone for the Peter and Paul Fortress on the nearby Rabbit Island . During this time he lived near the oldest square in Saint Petersburg, Troitsky Square ("Trinity Square") at the southeastern end of the island, which was Gorodsky Island ("City Island") after it was founded in the early 18th century and then Troitski Island was called until it was renamed in 1725 after the death of Peter I in St. Petersburg Island or St. Petersburg Island. The administrative center of Saint Petersburg moved to Vasilyevsky Island in the 1720s, and when it was banned from building stone houses north of Kronwerk in the 1730s, the island became more of a suburban residential area.

One of the first main streets was the Bolshoi Prospect ( boulevard ) from the 1730s, which crossed the island from the northwest to the Tushkow Bridge in the southwest and took the Parisian Grands Boulevards as a model. At that time, several regiments were housed on the island, so that the new roads linked them with each other. The first horse-drawn trams appeared in the 1860s, followed by trams in 1908 and trolley buses in 1948.

The other main street on the island is Kamennoostrowski Prospect, built in the 18th century, which begins at the Kronwerk esplanade. At Leo Tolstoy Square in the north it crosses the Bolshoi Prospect and then leads south to the Troitski Bridge to Kamenny Island. In the 1820s he was one equipped with special paving stones Chaussee . In the 1870s, a horse-drawn tram started running along the boulevard, and from 1909 there was an electric tram. In 1903 the boulevard was extended to Troitskaya Square.

When Saint Petersburg was renamed Petrograd in 1914, the island finally got its current name, Petrograd Island.
