history

The museum was founded by Ben Dronkers in 1985 and was the first of its kind in the world to exclusively provide information about cannabis. The aim of the museum was and is to inform interested visitors about the cultural phenomenon of hashish , hemp , and marijuana "and not just about the luxury goods in the Amsterdam coffee shops " (Ben Dronkers). “Since July 1st [2010] it is no longer allowed to smoke in Holland's cafés and restaurants. This also applies to the world-famous coffee shops. With one difference: the legislature has banned the smoking of tobacco, but not that of cannabis products. "

By 2008, the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum had two million visitors. A museum gallery was opened next to the museum . Among other things, the visitors are informed about the cultivation of cannabis up to the healing rituals in antiquity . The collections of the museum and the gallery include hemp weaving and spinning equipment, Dutch paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, showing citizens enjoying cannabis to relax. In addition, smoking paraphernalia from all over the world show that hashish and marijuana were smoked in different cultures.

Scientists and writers from all over the world have so far visited the museum to provide their own knowledge and to gather information. The departments for medicine, art and pop culture have been expanded. Multimedia exhibitions provide information on the historical, industrial and political aspects of cannabis with short films. The Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and is located at 148 Oudezijds Achterburgwal . The museum does not advertise drugs, but wants to provide information on its own.

Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum in Barcelona

The founder, Ben Dronkers, was looking for a new branch, a "sister museum", because of the constantly expanding collections. In 2003 he found a 15th century building in Barcelona that was officially opened on May 9, 2012. The interior was restored by Dronkers and the architect Jordi Romeu, with the Barcelona Heritage Preservation Organization overseeing the restoration.
