Hassan Tabatabaei Qomi

Grand Ayatollah Sayed Hassan Tabatabaei Qomi (* 1912 in Najaf ; † June 11, 2007 in Mashhad ) was an Iranian Shiite clergyman. Because of his criticism of the Velayat-e faqih , the Iranian government placed him under house arrest since 1984.

Life

Grand Ayatollah Hassan Tabatabaei Qomi is the son of Grand Ayatollah Qomi from Mashad . He had been under house arrest since 1984. In addition to this fact, which limited his ability to teach, his theological authority is also threatened by the fact that the Iranian state systematically favors the city of Qom as the center of theological learning, to the detriment of the city of Mashhad.

In an interview with the London magazine Kayhan International in June 1997, Tabatabai Qomi denounced the theological justification of the principle of the rule of the Supreme Legal Scholar ( velayat-e faqih ) of the Islamic Republic of Iran as a violation of Islamic principles. He also described the election of Mohammed Chatemi as president in 1997 as an indication of the rejection of the velayat-e faqih by the Iranian people.
