The main nunatak is a three ledge nunatak not far from the Budd coast in Wilkesland, East Antarctica . It rises 8 km south of the Alexander Nunatakker on the eastern flank of the lower foothills of the Vanderford Glacier .

Aerial photographs of the US American Operation Highjump (1946–1947) were used to map it. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him in 1955 after Ensign Richard William Haupt (1927-2006) of the United States Navy , who was involved in Operation Windmill (1947-1948) at the establishment of astronomical observation stations along the Budd coast and the Kaiser Wilhelm -II.-Coast was involved.
