Main field of view

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A main field of view ( HPF , high-power field ) is the section of a specimen visible through a microscope at a total of 400x magnification . Depending on the construction of the eyepiece , it has an area of 0.1 to 0.4 mm². In the case of quantitative use, the size of the main field of view should be specified or the results converted to mm², see the field number of the eyepiece.

This term is used e.g. B. in the diagnosis of histological sections , e.g. B. 10 mitoses on 50 main fields of view . For this purpose, a main field of vision is set, all mitoses are counted and the preparation is systematically shifted until 50 HPF have been counted. The number of mitoses then provides an indication of the malignancy of some types of cancer. In this application, the variable that is actually of interest is the number density in the volume of the sample, so that the layer thickness of the specimen also matters.
